Song in her heart, Suffern woman recaptures her voice

Maria Calfa DePaul's most treasured Christmas present this year came in the form of a song a song she could sing.

Music has always been a big part of the Suffern woman's life. But several years ago, she began to lose her voice.

By last summer, DePaul could barely utter a hoarse whisper.

"My husband said I sounded like Marge Simpson," she recalled. "I couldn't sing. I could hardly talk."

But a visit to one of the few voice doctors in the nation and a September operation at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow, followed by months of therapy, enabled her to regain her ability to sing just in time for Christmas.
